An Inheritance
Join me as I stumble my way through Brianna Wiest's The Pivot Year. She'll bring the wisdom; I'll bring the commentary, the scepticism, and the occasional existential wobble.
The Pivot Year - Day 6
“There are very few things that excite you in a way that makes you nearly uncomfortable with your wanting of them.”
Brianna Wiest
I’m not sure I believe that every desire is proof of potential - sometimes I desire a nap, a lottery win, or for people in front of me to walk faster…I’m not convinced these are all sacred callings.
But, I do think desire is data. It informs us - not always in what to chase, but what to question - Why this? Why now? Why does this particular thing pull at me when so many other possibilities leave me completely unmoved?
There are wants that are borrowed, polished, performative - you know, the ones we inherit because they look good from the outside. And then there are the quieter, stranger desires - the ones that keep returning, the ones that make us feel both ridiculous and alive.
Maybe out-of-the-box thinking is not about becoming wildly original overnight. Maybe it is simply noticing which parts of ourselves have been asking for oxygen while we have been busy being sensible.
Desire is not always an instruction, sometimes it's an invitation… and maybe the bravest thing we can do is stop treating our wanting as something embarrassing, and start listening to what its trying to tell us.
Some desires are born
with roots,
buried beneath the soft
machinery of us.
They bloom in darkness,
impatient for light,
aching against the ribs
like an unsaid name.
We do not choose
what calls to us-
we only choose how long
we pretend not to hear.Loves 🌷
